Allison Gerrard, Senior Manager, goes under the spotlight!

What is your role within RG?

I am a senior manager working within our Accounts and Outsourced Services division, dealing with a wide range of clients in a variety of sectors.

Tell me about your career to date…

I graduated with a First class degree in Maths before joining RG and qualifying as a Chartered Accountant.  After a brief spell working elsewhere I returned to RG and my time here now totals over 25 years.

What does your current role involve?

My current role involves working with a portfolio of clients, the majority of which are owner managed businesses, supporting them with their accounts and taxation requirements.

I also work in the specialist area of research and development, and I deal with many R&D tax claims for innovative companies for several of the partners.

What makes RG different?

As I’ve worked for RG for so many years it’s difficult to say how the firm differ from others.

My 3 most notable achievements to date would be….

Entering my first and only triathlon as a challenge to myself on turning 50, which resulted in my winning my age category and finishing in the top 10 overall.

Cycling the Coast to Coast twice, firstly off-road on a mountain bike in my twenties, and again in my fifties on a road bike.

Having completed many half marathons, my third achievement should have been to complete my first ever marathon in 2020.  However, the Covid pandemic has delayed that slightly, with my entry now having been deferred to 2022!

Tell us about your day so far….

I would generally start the day by checking and dealing with my emails.

I look after many of (partner) Detlev Anderson’s SME clients, so today my day involves contacting a couple of clients to request their year end accounts information, before moving on to reviewing another client’s accounts, which were prepared by one of the trainees, before contacting the client for additional information required.

I then prepare a set of corporation tax computations for a charity client.

I have a R&D tax claim to do next.  These can often be in a variety of sectors from manufacturing to software development, but for a change this is a claim for a company who actually do all their research in a classic laboratory environment.

I finish off the day by having a final review of emails received and dealing with any urgent issues.

What do you enjoy outside of work?

Spending time with family and friends.  I have twins who are away in their final year of university, so I’m busy planning their 21st party at the moment.

Being active generally. Apart from running and cycling which I frequently do, I would normally ski every year, with the exception of the last two years due to Covid!

And finally, leave us with one interesting fact about yourself…

My dream job was to be a fire fighter!
