Charlotte Burton, Senior Manager, goes under the spotlight!

What is your role within RG?

I am a Senior Manager in the Business Tax team.

Tell me about your career to date..

I started my career in London, on KPMG’s graduate training scheme, qualifying as both a Chartered Accountant and Chartered Tax Adviser in 2010.

In 2011, I joined the in-house tax team at Ingenious, where I helped to develop new venture capital funds in the media and live entertainment sectors – attending film premieres was one of the many perks!

In 2015, I moved to Newcastle with my now husband and joined RG’s growing Business Tax team.

What does your current role involve?

I specialise in EIS and SEIS fundraising, share planning (including EMI schemes and growth shares) and transactional tax work on acquisitions, disposals, MBOs and other corporate transactions.

What makes RG different?

RG excels at building meaningful, long-term relationships with clients.  We really take the time to get to know our clients and maintain consistent engagement teams across all service lines, which makes it easier to provide valuable insight and advice.

My 3 most notable achievements to date would be…

  • Passing all my professional exams first time, as well as being awarded ICAS’s Robert McArthur prize for the third best performance in the country in my accountancy case study.
  • I have always been passionate about giving back and, whilst working at KPMG, I completed a three month pro bono secondment to TaxAid, a charity that helps people on low incomes with their tax affairs as well as advising the government on tax policy.
  • My two sons, born in 2017 and 2020.  Motherhood is never easy and giving birth to my second son at the beginning of the Covid pandemic has only added to the challenge – surviving multiple lockdowns with a toddler and a new baby made for undoubtedly the hardest, but proudest, period of my life.

Tell us about your day so far…

I am generally woken up bright and early by my sons and my husband and I spend the early morning getting them fed, dressed and out of the door to nursery!  I usually drop them off by bike and cycle on to the office, to be at my desk by around 8.30.

I start my workday by checking my emails and updating my to do list, before catching up with Simon Whiteside, our head of department, and other team members.

I have a couple of Teams calls with clients to discuss upcoming projects, including assisting with applying for SEIS/ EIS advance assurance ahead of a fundraise and a complex share planning project involving a combination of EMI and growth shares.

I spend the rest of my day responding to technical queries from both clients and colleagues, reviewing a share valuation report and finalising a tax clearance application for a company purchase of own shares.

I finish with a final check of my emails before going to pick my sons up from nursery – it’s the highlight of my day seeing their faces light up when I walk in, and hearing about all the fun they’ve had!

What do you enjoy outside of work

Outside of work, I spend most of my time running around after my sons.  When I have the opportunity, I enjoy reading, swimming and yoga to help me unwind.  I am also a real foodie and love to cook for my family and friends, as well as discovering new places to eat out!

And finally, leave us with one interesting fact about yourself..

I spent part of my childhood living abroad in Brazil, Hong Kong and Singapore – as my mother was born and brought up in Brazil, I hold dual nationality!
