Emma Harrison, Manager, goes under the spotlight

What is your role within RG?

I am a manager in the Accounts and Business Services Team. I hold the ACA, CTA and Audit qualifications meaning my role is extremely varied as I work in three different RG service lines throughout the year. This definitely keeps me busy, but I really enjoy the variety of work which allows me to work with clients from a broad range of sectors.

Tell me about your career to date

I joined RG in September 2019 after graduating from Durham University with a first-class degree in Psychology. My degree was predominantly lab-based, and it was the logic and working with numbers which drew me to a career in Accountancy.

With RG, I qualified as a Chartered Accountant in August 2022 and a Chartered Tax Adviser in January 2023. I was then promoted to manager in the Business Services team in October 2024.

What does your current role involve?

As a manager in the Business Services team, my role involves overseeing a range of assignments for a large portfolio of clients. This portfolio includes a number of sole traders, partnerships, limited companies and trusts. I oversee year end accounts preparation, VAT returns, self-assessment tax returns, corporation tax returns and audit assignments. This involves reviewing work prepared by my colleagues, ensuring the work is prepared efficiently and ensuring files are complete ready for the partner’s review. By working in different departments, the deadlines for the various assignments tend to overlap so a large part of my role includes prioritising work and arranging staff to ensure strict deadlines are met.

My role is also very client-facing, and by having regular direct contact with clients, this helps me to better understand their businesses and the challenges and opportunities they face. By holding both accountancy and tax qualifications, I enjoy being able to consider their business from a more holistic perspective; being able to advise on not only the accounting aspects, but also the tax implications of certain transactions and working to minimise their tax liabilities.

What do you enjoy outside of work?

Outside of work I love spending time with my family and friends. I’m now an “Aunty Emma” to 9 children and they all keep me very busy! I enjoy going to my gym classes and visiting new places. I’m going to South Africa in May for my honeymoon which I’m very excited about.

What makes RG different?

I first walked into the RG office as a nervous 21-year-old student in 2018 for a job interview. I was instantly put at ease and jumped at the chance when I was offered the job. Since that very first day, RG’s support and encouragement has been with me at every step in my career. RG not only helped me to gain my qualifications, but helped me to achieve my promotion to manager within 5 years of my first day working for the firm. RG truly invest in your career and provide you with the support and guidance to achieve your goals.

Tell me an interesting fact about yourself

I’m supposedly a direct descendant of Fletcher Christian from Mutiny on the Bounty. I’m named Emma Jane after my great-grandmother, Jane Annie Young (nee Christian). Then all of the men in the Young family either have Christian as a forename or a middle-name to keep the Christian name going!
