Raneen Shawkat, Manager, goes under the spotlight

What is your role within RG?

I work as a Tax Manager in the personal tax team managing a wide variety of clients, ranging from high-net worth individuals, partnerships and partners, to agricultural farms and farmers, and trusts.  I also assist clients with IHT and estate planning where required.

Tell me about your career to date..

I graduated from Northumbria University with an Accounting degree over 10 years ago and joined Ernst & Young LLP (EY) early 2014 as a Tax Assistant.  I completed my ATT and trained at EY for just over four and half years and then moved to Womble Bond Dickinson UK LLP (WBD) to expand my experience further.  I worked for WBD for over six and a half years dealing with high-net worth clients, partners and trusts, as well as carrying out IHT and estate planning work where required, before joining Ryecroft Glenton in June 2024.

What makes RG different?

One of the key factors that set RG apart is the strong trust and mutual respect between its partners and employees. Everyone shares a commitment to both individual growth and the overall success of the company. Since joining RG, partners and staff members have been highly supportive and ready to take on new challenges whenever opportunities arise.

RG stands out as a top-tier accountancy and business advisory firm due to its dedication to community engagement, strategic expansion, and comprehensive client services. The firm provides a broad range of advisory solutions, including accounting, taxation, financial planning, and corporate finance. This well-rounded approach ensures that clients receive customised support tailored to their specific business requirements.

Although the firm operates independently, it possesses extensive experience and expertise.  We frequently collaborate with colleagues from other departments on advisory projects to ensure that we deliver well-rounded, high-quality services that meet client expectations.

What does your current role involve?

I manage a wide client portfolio, ranging from business owners, farmers, to partners, partnerships, and trusts.  I oversee their annual compliance, such as completing their tax returns. Given the complexity of my clients’ affairs, I frequently engage in an in-depth discussion with them about their ongoing tax matters. My goal is to assist them in addressing their needs while minimising and managing their tax liabilities wherever possible.

My role is highly diverse on a day-to-day basis. I have the chance to assist partners with various advisory projects. Recently, I have been involved in interesting projects, such as assessing the eligibility for principal private residence relief for the parents of beneficiaries in a trust that owns a property.

While I enjoy working closely with clients, I also take great satisfaction in supporting the partners in managing the overall team, as well as mentoring junior staff as they gain experience and develop within the firm.

What do you enjoy outside of work?

Outside of work, I love spending time outdoors with my family and organising our annual holidays.  I make an effort to stay active by going to the gym twice a week when possible and really enjoy my Saturday morning Bounce Class.

I also cherish moments with my four-year-old, whether we are building Lego, doing arts and crafts, or reading stories together.

And finally, leave us with one interesting fact about yourself?

I have a hidden singing talent and in my younger days I used to be part of a choir!
