Welcome to the Spring edition of our Agricultural Journal
On behalf of our Agriculture and Landed Estates team, I am very pleased to introduce the Spring edition of our Agricultural Journal, which is packed with articles that I hope you will find interesting and relevant to the challenges faced by rural businesses and their owners.
As the industry continues to navigate through the transition from the Common Agricultural Policy, the sector faces new concerns in the form of rising energy bills, huge price rises of products farmers rely on such as fertiliser, and access to seasonal labour.
Farming across the UK is going through a period of significant change as we shift to a new model that rewards farmers for the role they play in food production and for how they protect our environment. However, change is not easy and is especially challenging in these difficult economic conditions. This edition of our Agricultural Journal provides an update on the three new environmental land management schemes which form part of the Agricultural Transition Plan, along with an update on the Lump Sum Exit Scheme, the eligibility criteria and the tax treatment to be applied to lump sums paid to farmers who choose to exit the industry.
You will also find a guest article from Laura Cureton of GSC Grays on carbon capture in livestock farming, details from Rishi Sunak’s annual spring statement and an update on Basis Period Reform with some practical guidance on the changes to when farm profits will be taxed.
As ever, please do get in touch with one of our Agricultural and Landed Estates Team if you would like to discuss any of the matters raised.
