Agricultural Journal Autumn 2023

Welcome to the Autumn edition of our Agricultural Journal

On behalf of the Agricultural and Landed Estates team, I am very pleased to present to you the Autumn 2023 edition of Ryecroft Glenton’s Agricultural Journal, which is packed with articles that I hope you will find interesting and relevant to the challenges faced by rural businesses and their owners.

I for one cannot believe how quickly the months are passing by, with both days and nights seemingly shorter, retailers gearing up for Christmas and the weather its usual unpredictable self!

Our news feeds are full of talk of Net Zero policies and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s recent changes to the government’s green measures. While many have criticised the announcement for undermining efforts to address the climate crisis, many rural campaigners have welcomed the government’s climbdown as some measures were ‘simply unachievable and counterproductive’.

In the midst of this chaos, the unseasonably wet UK weather caused problems for this year’s harvest in August, raising fears of further food price inflation.

The world remains in a state of flux, with the current issues facing UK farms and farmers being a direct result of this unpredictable state. The industry is directly impacted by Brexit, climate change, and COVID-19’s lasting impact, and the changing best practices are having an indirect impact on their long term sustainability.

As always, Agricultural business do what they always do, they adapt. Businesses are managing this constant state of flux, preparing for the future by taking control over spiralling costs and investing in efficiency-boosting technology for example.

In this issue we touch on the pressures facing the industry and provide details of HMRC’s Prosperity Fund. We also provide details of the Renters Reform Bill, reminders on the tax relief imposed on residential finance costs and Capital Gains Tax 60 day reporting requirements, as well as a very interesting guest article from Hayley Parker, Managing Director of specialist agricultural marketing agency Flame Marketing.

Changes of course sometimes bring financial, legal and taxation issues and we are here to help you with your plans. If you have any questions or require any further information on any of the articles covered in this issue, please do not hesitate to contact any member of the team.
