North East: M&A Technology Sector Snapshot – H1 2024

Welcome to the thirteenth edition of Ryecroft Glenton’s UK M&A Snapshot Report.

Previously we have produced our publications on a quarterly basis, with an assessment of that quarter’s deal activity and a deep dive on key sub sectors.  From now on we are moving to two publications per annum, assessing both the half year and full year picture, analysing the key trends in the sector and considering what the future may hold, whilst still looking at key sub sectors. We’ll have more information to work with in each publication, so we hope that our new updates will prove to be an informative and interesting read.

We continue to consider the big picture and what’s happening across the country, but we won’t forget the North East. This is our home and there is a lot of exciting news to share about tech in the region. With this new approach, we hope to give everyone a clearer and better picture of the tech deals scene, both here in the North East and across the UK.

We’ll also continue to focus on key issues that are relevant to many tech business owners, with guest articles and contributions from many respected business people in the sector, including tech entrepreneurs, investors and NEDs.  In this edition we are very pleased to include an article from Dr. Natalia Blagburn, a seasoned venture capital investor at Mercia Ventures, and highly respected non-executive director and expert on board governance. Dr. Blagburn shares her perspectives on the strategies that boards can adopt to facilitate successful exits, whilst also sharing some interesting case studies.

In this edition we delve into the dynamic landscape of the UK technology sector, providing a comprehensive analysis of key industry trends and their implications on the M&A market in the first half of 2024. In addition, we will be taking a deep dive into the Bioengineering sector, whilst analysing the key trends affecting this industry at present as well looking at what’s to come. We are also delighted to announce our collaboration with Weightmans for both this publication, covering the half year to June 2024, and our next publication, which will cover the full year to December 2024.  Weightmans is a leading national law firm renowned for its expertise in an array of legal disciplines, including corporate M&A, and also has a strong focus on the technology sector, evidenced by its many clients operating in this sector and its formation of a cyber security consultancy business in late 2023.

Weightmans have contributed three excellent articles discussing the following key trends:

  • The Rise of US Based Purchasers
  • The Tech Sector Funding Gap in the North East
  • The Ever-Increasing importance of Cyber Security
