Welcome to the Spring edition of our Agricultural Journal
On behalf of the Agriculture and Landed Estates team, I am very pleased to present to you the Spring 2024 edition of Ryecroft Glenton’s Agricultural Journal, which is packed with articles that I hope you will find interesting.
Spring is deemed to be a period of renewed energy and optimism for farmers, as the crops start to grow, livestock is born, and hedges across the countryside are rich with colour across the landscape. However, you would be forgiven for not sharing this optimism, with the amount of rainfall we have seen. It seems to have started in the autumn and has been constant ever since, inevitably threatening domestic food production and adding increasing financial pressure to the sector.
In this issue of our Agricultural Journal, we address the main issues raised in the Spring Budget 2024 affecting land and property-based businesses, as well as providing a roundup of the main areas of grant funding available.
We also offer compliance led advice on the importance of both determining the employment status of your farm contractors, and having a well written partnership agreement. These topics are driven by current increases in our workload as a result of these matters not being addressed at an earlier stage.
In line with the government’s commitment to leave the environment in a measurably better state than it was found, biodiversity net gain (‘BNG’) is a hot topic, but also a potential income stream that could help farmers as their Basic Payment Scheme funding continues to reduce. Our professional friends at GSC Grays have provided a guest article for this edition of our Agricultural Journal talking through some of the key points.
I hope you enjoy reading our Spring Agricultural Journal. Please do get in touch with one of our Agriculture and Landed Estates team if you would like to discuss any of the matters raised in this issue.
