We are delighted to have reached the milestone of 120 years since the formation of Ryecroft Glenton by Wilton Ryecroft and his cousin Arthur Glenton on 6th August 1901, when they opened their first office on Newcastle’s Pilgrim Street.
Although there is no longer any Ryecroft family involvement in the practice, the Glenton name continues in the form of Tony, the firm’s Senior Partner and the grandson of Arthur, and Tony’s son, Peter. The second generation was represented by Ray Glenton, one of Arthur’s two sons and uncle of Tony (Tony’s father Eric chose to pursue a career as a solicitor).
Our founders would be astonished by the technological innovations which have taken place in the accountancy world since their day. How could they have envisaged a scenario where it was possible for the entire firm to work remotely from home during a global pandemic with little interruption to normal client service. It has to be said, though, that this wasn’t something the current partners imagined could be possible until necessity proved it was!
Some things haven’t changed at all in the last 120 years; most importantly the value of longstanding client and professional relationships for which we are very grateful. Reaching the 120 year milestone gives us an opportunity to thank all our clients for their continued support and to thank all our staff, both past and present, for their hard work in delivering an excellent service over all these years.
Whilst we have not been able to trace any current clients back as far as 120 years, the longest current connection is through the Handley Trust, a well known North East charity which was set up by Heaton dentist turned entrepreneur Wilf Handley who invented Domestos and was himself one of Ray Glenton’s clients in the 1930’s.
We are excited about the prospects for the North East in the next decade, especially in light of the post COVID shift to greater remote working which we hope will bring more entrepreneurs to the region in search of a better quality of life. We very much look forward to seeing what our clients achieve, and to supporting them, in the coming years and hopefully well beyond!
